Master Thesis Spotlight: Reliable SiC Power Modules for Future Wind Turbines
As part of MoWiLife, master’s student Narendra Walawalkar from Aalborg University completed a thesis on how to make high-voltage SiC power modules work reliably in parallel for future wind turbine converters.
The study focused on the shift from today’s converter technology. To enable this, the work explored replacing conventional IGBTs with silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, which offer better performance but require new solutions to handle high current demands.
By testing 2.3 kV SiC modules, the research investigated how several modules can share electrical load safely, and how to avoid challenges such as uneven current distribution and voltage oscillations. The findings provide valuable insights into building more compact, efficient, and reliable converters, directly supporting the development of future multi-megawatt wind power systems.
